My six-year-old joined the swim team this year. At the first practice, he was informed that as a new swimmer, he needed to practice in the first lane, where he could get help if he needed it (he did). Every day for the rest of the week he asked if he was still new. He wanted to move to the further lanes with his friends who were on the team last year.
“Yes, honey. You’re going to be a new swimmer all summer. This is your first season on the team.”
Sometimes we want to rush past that newbie stage, but mastery takes time. It can be scary to step out of your comfort zone and into an uncertain future, especially since beginners often aren’t aware of what they don’t know. Take the time to see what’s really there. Trust your intuition to keep moving you forward. Recognize every step as part of the process.
There will be challenges, and they may come from unexpected sources, but your journey doesn’t start until you take the first step.
